Step-by-Step Guide for Back-to-School Glyph

1. Answering the Questions:

Kick things off by having your students answer six questions related to their school preferences. These questions range from their favorite subject to what they’re most excited about this year. The answers will guide how they decorate their cupcakes.

2. Customizing the Cupcake Craft:

Each student will receive a blank cupcake template to personalize. Depending on their answers, they’ll choose different toppings and decorations for their cupcakes. This hands-on activity not only taps into their creativity but also makes for a fun and relaxed classroom environment.

3. Back to School Glyph- Discussing and Analyzing the Data:

Once the cupcakes are decorated, gather as a class to discuss the results. Use this opportunity to analyze the data – How many students chose math as their favorite subject? How many are excited about recess? This discussion not only helps with math skills like counting and comparing but also opens up conversations about shared interests and unique differences.

4. Writing About a Sweet Year:

Wrap up the activity by having your students write about why they think this year is going to be sweet. They can reflect on their answers and the new things they’ve learned about their classmates. This writing exercise not only reinforces their thoughts but also makes for a lovely addition to their cupcake creations. It will also give you a writing sample for each student.

5. Use the Back-to-School Glyph to Create a Sweet Bulletin Board:

Finally, use the decorated cupcakes and the students’ writings to create a “Sweet Year” bulletin board. It’s a vibrant and personal display that showcases each student’s individuality and sets a cheerful tone for your classroom.
